The Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI) offers us a roadmap to the interpreting process. Just as a literal map (or GPS) can offer direction and redirection, the IMI assists us in looking at the interpreting process (our own and others) with tools of descriptive language and structure of a process that is invisible and dynamic and complex. As we look at meaning based interpreting from a meta perspective, we gain insights into the mechanisms that operate in our brains leading to decisions about the production of a message in the target language. Our aim is not to look at that product only, but to comprehend the layers of complexity between language and meaning, including the embedded intent or goal of the source and the affect conveyed.
